2011 nesting season is underway. We have some pairs on eggs and are still checking on others. If a site is bolded, new information about 2011 is included. Be sure to check out our webcams.

**BREEDING PAIRS**

Chicago, McKinley Park
Adult Female: unidentified
Adult Male: unidentified

Pair present in 2011. In March, four birds were observed at the site. The nest ledge is inaccessible and no good view into the nest is possible. In 2010, one adult was identifed as unbanded (believed to be the male), while the other adult had a b/g band. In 2010, 3 young fledged from this site without any issues.

14th year for this site. A pair of peregrines has been present during the 2011 breeding season and courtship/copulation has been observed. The nest is inaccessible, but a pair does seem to be nesting.

Chicago, North Broadway
Adult Female: Auntie Em (b/g 5/*P), 1999, Landmark on the Lake, Milwaukee, WI
Adult Male: unidentified

18th year for this site. Four eggs were seen on 4/1/11. The female has been confirmed as Auntie Em (b/g 5/*P). Last year they fledged 5 young. .

Chicago, Pilsen Park

10th year for this site. As of the end of March 2011, no eggs had been laid in the nest box though two adults were present. In 2010, the male was “Lynn”, b/g L/N (9th year at site) and the female was Amazon, b/g R/38 (her 2nd year at site). Three eggs were laid, two of which hatched by May 10th. Both chicks were found dead on May 25th, last being seen alive in 5/21.

Pair present in 2011. A new location along the mag mile was selected for 2010. Four eggs were laid and the adult female was identified as Autumn Hope, b/g 22/C. None of the eggs hatched and an abandoned egg was collected on 5/11/10. A renest was attempted on the building at Michigan Ave & Wacker Dr (site used in 2009.) The female was identified at this location also as b/g 22/C. Four eggs were laid, none of which hatched. Two infertile eggs were collected on July 9th.

Adult Male: “Mr. M.” (unbanded, left leg injured during 2009 nesting season) (3rd year)

In 2011, the birds are using the 2009 location, north of the building used in 2010. No confirmation on the adult female id. In 2010 the adults were an unbanded male (3rd year identifiable by injured leg) and female Helen b/g 73/D (Manitowoc WI 2004), her 3rd year at the site. The pair fledged three chicks.

Chicago, South Wacker

Oldest of Illinois nest sites (25th year.) No id on the adults yet. Last years’ birds were – female, Rahn b/g 01/A (Sheboygan WI 2001) (5th yr) and male, Joe b/g (59/H) (3rd yr). First egg seen on 3/28/11. At least three eggs. On 4/7/11, a fight among peregrines resulted in a dead peregrine being picked up at an adjacent building (b/g 97/N). Observations on 4/11/11 indicate the original clutch may be abandoned. In 2010 they fledged 3 chicks.

Chicago, St. Mary’s Hospital
Adult Female: “Mary” (unnamed) (b/g R/90), 2007, I-280 Bridge, Quad Cities, IA
Adult Male: unidentified

During the off season, a nest box was installed. Five eggs have been laid in the box. The adult female has been reconfirmed as b/g R/90. In 2010, two nest attempts failed at the site.

Chicago, St. Michael’s
Adult Female: Ballistic (b/g 69/C), 2005, Bohn Building, Cleveland, OH (3rd year)
Adult Male: “Morgan” (unbanded)

This is the 7th year for this site. In 2011, an unbanded male (2nd year) and female Ballistic, b/g 69/C (4th year at the site) have been identified. This site is still inaccessible due to building construction. Observations from the ground seem to indicate they are currently incubating eggs.

Adult Male: “The Prof” (unbanded)

13th year for this site. Three eggs total with the first egg being laid on March 30, 2011. The male has been confirmed as being unbanded (6th yr). The identity of the female hasn’t been confirmed but is believed to be Rosie (b/r *6/D) her 12th year at the site. In 2010 they fledged three young.

Chicago, Uptown Theater
Adult Female: Zoom (b/r *4/H), 1997, North Central Life, St. Paul, MN
Adult Male: Stan (b/g 98/K), 2005, Uptown Theater, Chicago, IL

11th year for this site. The female is still Zoom. The previous male (b/g G/G) was sighted early in the season but on 4/2/11 a new male, Stan b/g 98/K (2005 Uptown Chicago) was photographed. On 4/6 only a single egg was present. Last year they fledged two chicks.

Alton, IL

Pair present at same part of cliff used in 2010. Copulation observed on March 28th.

Evanston, IL: Library
Adult Female: “Nona” (unnamed) (b/g 64/D), 2004, Firstar Bank, Cedar Rapids, IA (5th year)
Adult Male: Squawker (b/g 48/M), 2003, WEPCO Power Plant, Pleasant Prairie, WI (4th year)

8th year for this location in Evanston. The adult female was reconfirmed as 64/D (b/g) and the male was identified as Squawker (b/g 48/M). The nest is in a different column than used previously. The first of four eggs was laid on March 29th. In 2010 they fledged three young.

Hyde Park, IL: University of Chicago
Adult Female: unidentified
Adult Male: unidentified

Two birds are present in 2011 but are hanging out in the gutters and not in either of the two available nest boxes. On 4/8/11 an infertile egg was pulled from one of the boxes, left-over from a late season resent attempt last year. In 2010 the adults were female, Cyclone b/g K/28 (Aberdeen, OH 2006) (1st year at site) and male was identified as b/g S/T, his 4th year at the site.

Pair present in 2011, with both adults again being unbanded. In 2010 – fledged four young.

Waukegan, IL
Adult Female: Fran (b/g 5/*X), 1997, Hoan Bridge, Milwaukee, WI
Adult Male: unidentified

11th year for this site. First egg seen on 3/23/11. On 4/6/11, one egg was pushed off to the side and is not being incubated with the rest of the clutch.

**NON-BREEDING & UNKNOWN STATUS**

Chicago, Lake Shore Drive

Adult Male: unidentified

At least one bird present earlier in the 2011 season, but not as of April. The previously identified male from this site (Stan) is currently at the Uptown site.

Chicago, Lawndale

Adult Male: unidentified

Single adult bird observed sporadically throughout the season in 2010. Extensive work was being done on the outside facade of the structure, which may have caused the adults to abandon nesting at the site this year.

Chicago, Lakeview
Adult Female: unidentified
Adult Male: unidentified

The ledge used by the peregrines at this site is not accessible or visible other than from watching from the street. While a pair of peregrines was seen periodically throughout the season in 2010, no behavior indicating chicks was observed. One adult appeared to be unbanded while the other had a b/g band.

Calumet River, IL

In 2010 – 2 adult peregrines seen on & off during breeding season. Both had b/g bands. On June 25th, 2010 one juvenile was observed.

McCook, IL

Adult Male: unidentified

2010 – Birds nesting in a series of quarries. Adult peregrines seen sporadically in the spring. Glenn Gabanski reported sighting a single juvenile flying into the quarry on July 8th 2010.

Peoria, IL

A single adult wintered for the 2009/2010 season. A nest box is available though no adults stay for the breeding season.
