Updates from Mary
Mary just sent us an update on all the nests to this date. Wow! What a lot of activity!
125 S. Wacker
This site has been used for nesting since 1989. The 2007 adult male identification has been confirmed. The adult male is Etienne (b/b 7/6, 2002, Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada), the same male from last year. The adult female is suspected to be last years female, Rahn (b/g 01/A, Wisconsin Power and Light Edgewater Generating Station, Sheboygan, WI), but her bands have not been confirmed. They laid their first egg on 3/30/07 and completed a clutch of 4 (unconfirmed) eggs sometime later.
5821 N. Broadway
This site has been used for nesting since 1993. The 2007 adult identifications have been confirmed. The adult female is Auntie Em (b/g 5/*P, 1999, Landmark on the Lake, Milwaukee, WI) and the adult male is Tracy (b/r *P/M, 1997, 5821 Broadway, Chicago, IL). Auntie Em & Tracy have been nesting at Broadway since 2004. There were three adult peregrines present at the nest site on 3/27/07 but no eggs. On 4/8/07, five eggs were present in the nest.
Hyde Park
This site has been used for nesting since 1994. A singled bird was observed periodically over the winter and to date. In February 2007, we recieved a photo which confirmed that the 2005 adult male (unnamed, b/g S/T, 2000, Unitarian Church, Hyde Park, Chicago, IL) was active in the area.
River Birds
Various places along the river have been used by a pair of peregrines since 1994. This year, peregrines have been reported in the neighborhood of Adams in Wacker. Two adults were spotted in March.
MCC (prison) Falcons
This site has been used for nesting since 1998. 2007 adult female indentification has been confirmed. The adult female is Hercules (b/r *D/W, 1997, City Center, Minneapolis, MN), which was the same female as last year. The adult male’s identity has not been fully confirmed. Last year, his identity was mostly (no photographic proof) confirmed to be Emily (b/g, 5/*E, 2000, WEPCO Oak Creek Power Plant, Oak Creek, WI). This is a male banded and named as a female. As of this writing, the top number “5” has been confirmed. As in previous years, the nesting eyrie is not visible, so we cannot give an egg count. However, copulation was witnessed in March and both adults are coming in and out of a niche on the west side with regularity.
University Hall, UIC
This site has been used for nesting since 1999. The 2007 adult male identification has been confirmed. The adult male is unbanded and suspected to be the same unbanded adult male as 2006. The adult female is suspected to be last years female, Rosie (b/r *6/D, 1997, Landmark on the Lake, Milwaukee, WI), but her bands have not been confirmed. If it is Rosie, this is her 9th year nesting on University Hall. As of April 7th, four eggs had been laid.
Uptown Theatre
This site has been used for nesting since 2001. The 2007 adult identification has been confirmed. The adult female is Zoom (b/r *4/H, 1997, North Central Life, St. Paul, MN). The adult male is “Gigi” (b/g G/G, 2001, NIPSCO Schahfer Plant, Wheatfield, IN). This is “Gigi’s” fifth year at the Uptown and Zoom’s seventh. On 4/26/97, it was confirmed that they were incubating 4 (unconfirmed number) eggs.
Lakeview
This site has been used for nesting since 2001. The ledge used by the peregrines at this site is not accessible or visible other than from watching from the street. Adult birds present at site in April 2007.
Waukegan
This site has been used for nesting since 2001. The 2007 adult identifications have not been confirmed, but they are thought to be the same pair from 2006 – adult female Fran (b/g 5/*X, Hoan Bridge, Milwaukee, WI), adult male unknown (b/g band). The webcam can be found HERE.
Pilson Park
This site has been used for nesting since 2002. The 2007 adult identification has not been confirmed. The adult male is thought to be the same as last year, Unnamed Male (b/g L/N, 2000, 5821 N. Broadway, Chicago, IL). As of 4/1/07, the female was brooding 2+ eggs).
Lake Calumet / Skyway
This site has been used sporadically for nesting since 2002. There has been no activity noted yet for 2007. Birds were observed in 2006, including copulation. Two immatures were observed near the skyway bridge.
Evanston Library
This site has been used for nesting since 2004. The 2007 adult identification has not been confirmed. The adult female is thought to be the same as last year, Unnamed Female (b/g 64/D, 2004, Firstar Bank, Cedar Rapids, IA). [Update: *The adult male has been tentatively identified as Squawker (b/g 48/M, WEPCO Pleasant Prairie Power Plant, Kenosha, WI)]. A four egg clutch was completed on 4/10/07. Old Sears Tower
This site has been used for nesting since 2004. There are birds present in 2007, but they have not been identified.
St. Michael’s Old Town
This site has been used for nesting since 2005. In March 2007, adult indentification has been confirmed. The adult female was Kelliwatt (b/g 60/D, 2004, J.M. Stuart Power Plant, Aberdeen, OH). The adult male was Hops (b/g 58/M, 2003, Miller Brewery, Milwaukee, WI). On 3/23/07, Kelliwatt laid a single egg. The egg was extremely blood covered and there was an inordinate amount of blood stained on the building ledge by the adult female, Kelli. On 3/24/07 Kelli took off and three birds were observed in flight. Later that day id was confirmed on a new female, Ballistic (b/g 69/C, 2005, Bohn Building, Cleveland, OH) (see Belmont site for further details.) The birds were absent from the site in April. The initial egg laid by Kelli was retrieved on 4/24/07.
Field Museum
NEW SITE for 2007. A pair of peregrines have been seen this year using the ledges on the Field Museum. The ledge thought to be the nest ledge is inaccessible and without an avenue for viewing. Copulation was observed in late March. Current behavior of adults indicates possible hatching. The adult male is unbanded and the female has been identified as far as b/g 73/??.
Belmont & LSD
NEW SITE for 2006/2007. In the fall of 2006, a pair of peregrines began using the ledges of a building near Belmont and Lake Shore Drive. On November 21 2006 the female was identified as Ballistic (b/g 69/C, 2005, Bohn Building, Cleveland, OH). The male was identified only as far as having a b/g band. No reports were given of this pair again until then end of April (2007). Apparently 2 eggs were laid in a gutter and lost during a rainstorm on 4/2/07. Ballistic was reported at the end of March over at St. Michael’s.
Fermilab, Batavia IL
NEW SITE for 2007. A pair of peregrines are utilizing the ledges on the main building at Fermilab. No nesting is confirmed but both adults have been identified. The female is one year old Neomi Jo (b/r P/*L, 2006, LG&E Pland, Bedford, KY) and Joe (b/g D/11, 2005, 5821 Broadway, Chicago, IL).
Bloomington, IL
Wintering site 2006/2007. A single bird over-wintered and was last seen during week of March 5th. A nest box is present.
Peoria, IL
No current activity. Mature male and immature female seen during the winter of 2005/2006. A nest box was installed during this time period as well.
